Why Rooted Life Adventures'

Australia Gap Year Program is the

Perfect Choice for You

Written by women for women

Honestly, it’s pretty simple. Most students come to us because they:

Want to live abroad—and Byron Bay, Australia is their dream.

A boho beach town offers the perfect place to slow down, reconnect, and explore a different way of life. For many, it’s the reset they didn’t know they needed.

Are feeling stuck or unsure of what’s next.

They need space to reflect, figure out their direction, and receive guidance to help shape it. In this environment, clarity comes naturally.

Need more support than the average program.

Many have been on a mental health journey and want to be surrounded by people who truly get it. As a result, they find comfort in a space that values emotional wellness.

Crave real community.

This program attracts kind, intentional young women who share meals, surf sessions, and honest conversations about identity, purpose, and growth. Together, they build friendships that last well beyond the program.

Want real independence—with a safety net.

Students learn to cook, clean, plan, and budget in real life, while also having structure, mentorship, and guidance when needed. It’s a balance that fosters confidence and accountability.

Enjoy variety.

Surfing, yoga, group circles, volunteering, pottery, beach hikes, town markets—each week offers something new. Therefore, there’s always room for discovery.

Are driven for growth—but not burnout.

They want to be challenged but also rested. Here, students live in a cozy, sun-filled home with all the comforts—and none of the pressure.

Strong female mentors

You’ll be guided by grounded, inspiring women who’ve each forged their own path—and more importantly, are here to help you find yours.

Unlike some polished programs from large companies with boardrooms full of men in suits, this is something different. Instead, it’s a small, woman-owned labor of love, run by a crew of passionate, grounded, and adventurous humans who actually live this work. That’s why we created this program: to reimagine what a gap year, wellness retreat, or community experience could truly be. Think slower. Softer. More intentional. Rooted in connection—to nature, to others, and most importantly, to your own truth. Furthermore, we believe in awe. In real, honest conversation. In taking your shoes off and letting your feet touch the earth. Above all, we believe in creating the kind of life that makes you feel alive from the inside out.

This is for the young woman who wants to get clear on who she is becoming. Ultimately, she wants to walk away with a deeper sense of self, direction, and meaning. So, we built this little corner of the world—here in the wild, rugged beauty of Australia—for exactly that. If you’re ready to live differently, live deeply, and live fully… we’ll meet you there.

Practical reasons to choose us

Pottery studio internship learning directly from female entrepreneurs

Students learn the art of ceramics—throwing, glazing, and firing—and walk away with hands-on skills they can carry forward. Find out how a small Australia business was built from the ground up and what it takes to build something meaningful from scratch.

Live with a therapeutic coach

Students receive daily guidance from a trained life coach who helps them regulate emotions, identify internal blocks, and build strategies for personal and academic success. Consequently, they grow in emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and resilience. Build a real foundation for independence.

Students take full ownership of cooking, cleaning, budgeting and running a household

They do this alongside their peers, and with adult support when needed. As a result, they gain the life skills and self-sufficiency needed for college and beyond.

Log 30+ hours at an animal hospital

We volunteer at an animal hospital! Together we learn about all of the different animals and how to care for them and environmental risks to their safety. Students also learn about all of the roles and jobs needed to make this animal hospital a success.

Practice leadership, accountability and teamwork

Living in a shared space means stepping up, resolving conflict, contributing to the group, and building a sense of community. Therefore, students strengthen critical skills that matter in every workplace, classroom, and relationship.

Gain international living and cultural immersion experience

Spending six weeks in Australia gives students global awareness, maturity, and adaptability—all of which are highly valued by universities and future employers. Moreover, living abroad helps students grow in confidence and cultural sensitivity.

Leave with clarity and a next step plan

Students don’t just grow personally—they leave with a mapped-out vision for what’s next. With support from coaches and mentors, students work on resumes, college or job applications, and design a post-program plan tailored to their goals.

We're not just a program. It’s a calling—to follow the pull inside you, chase the horizon, and find your way home to yourself.

A week in the life

every day has a theme

Sunday

Life Skills Day

Oh yes, Adulting 101...

Our home is located in beautiful Byron Bay Australia, the boho beach town of your dreams. We all live together in a shared home and are all equally responsible for taking care of both the house and ourselves. Each day, we practice showing up for the group and for our own well-being.

One day a week, we dedicate time to deep cleaning the house, doing laundry, creating a meal plan for the week, going grocery shopping, and learning to manage a budget. Additionally, we prep and cook in the kitchen, making nourishing meals together. Furthermore, we use this time to organize, reflect, and prepare for the week ahead. In summary, we learn to live independently, develop essential life skills, and build confidence in our ability to care for ourselves and contribute to a shared space.

Monday

Volunteer Day

Volunteer with animals!

Each week students volunteer at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, gaining a close-up, hands-on encounter with Australia’s incredible wildlife. They help care for injured and orphaned animals while learning about the environmental risks threatening their survival. Beyond working alongside veterinarians and wildlife carers, students also see the many roles that keep an animal hospital running—and walk away with a deeper understanding of both the animals themselves and the bigger picture of conservation in Australia.

Tuesday

Small Business Internship at a Pottery Studio

Pottery internship!

Our students complete a hands-on internship with a local Byron Bay pottery studio. Together, we dive into the art of working with clay—learning to throw, glaze, and fire with intention and care.

Through this immersive process, we not only build pottery skills, but also connect more deeply to the earth, our bodies, and our inner artist. Plus, it’s a lot of fun! At the same time, students explore what it really takes to run a small, heart-led business. In fact, we use the studio as a real-world case study in entrepreneurship, creative living, and purpose-driven work. As a result, students walk away with practical skills, meaningful insight, and a deeper understanding of both art and business.

Wednesday

Wellness Day

Wellness

3 things happen on Wellness days:

(1) Any student who is seeing a therapist form back home has the option to continue to see their therapist through tele-health in the morning

(2) Our Wellness Director leads a weekly workshop

(3) Future Planning: we head to an office space and students spend 2 hours planning their future-- working on college applications, resumes, job hunting, planning future travel etc. all with staff to guide them, proof read, and brainstorm.

Thursday

Cultural Immersion

Culture

We curate intentional cultural immersion activities where students can learn about diverse values, worldviews, skills, and life habits. Through this, students expand their worldview and enjoy a global perspective and new lens to view their lives at home. This includes learning about Australian wildlife, the native aboriginal culture as well as the life of modern-day Australians.

Friday

Adventure Excursion

Adventure

Each week, we go on epic adventures! Whether it’s learning to surf in crystal-clear waves, hiking to waterfalls, riding horses on the beach, kayaking with dolphins, snorkeling with sea turtles, or practicing sunrise yoga by the sea, these moments are crafted to help students feel present, connected, and alive. We love to go on an adventure day.. and then come home, have dinner, shower, and sleep in our own beds.

Saturday

Free Day

Free day!

We have one free day a week so that you can rest, reflect, have a beach day, relax by the ocean, explore town, live like a local, pursue your own interests, and play with your friends.

  • Wellness Workshops & Future Planning

  • Wrap Around Care
Independent Living Skills
Independent Living Skills

Students fly together to beautiful Byron Bay, Australia—the place they’ll call home for the semester. Upon arrival, we settle into a sun-filled coastal home nestled in the hills, complete with ocean views, tropical gardens, and quiet corners perfect for connection and reflection. Just minutes away, you’ll find pristine beaches, rainforest trails, and waterfalls. In fact, we’re located close to the vibrant heart of Byron, offering the best of both serenity and community.

At the core of the program is learning how to live independently—with confidence, clarity, and care. To support this, one day each week is dedicated to real-world life skills: cooking, cleaning, laundry, budgeting, and grocery shopping.

Throughout the program, students learn how to be thoughtful housemates, share a home, and take ownership of daily responsibilities. To make this practical, they’re split into cooking teams and take turns planning meals, building grocery lists, managing a shared budget, shopping locally, and preparing dinners.

Each evening, the group comes together to cook—with music playing, laughter filling the kitchen, and an emphasis on nourishment for both body and spirit. Finally, we often end our days gathered around a big, family-style dinner table. It’s here that we share stories, check in with one another, and continue growing together in community.

Community | Group Living
Community | Group Living

Community is at the heart of everything we do in the Australia program. After all, becoming yourself is something you shouldn't have to do alone.

Living in close connection with a group of intentional young women creates daily opportunities for growth—through real conversations, shared responsibilities, spontaneous laughter, and learning how to show up for one another with compassion. As a result, you’ll develop emotional intelligence, communication skills, and the kind of confidence that comes from being seen, supported, and celebrated.

Importantly, our home is tech-light and connection-rich. Rather than scrolling endlessly, we sip tea, journal on the deck, and have long, honest chats in the kitchen. Together, we share affirmations at dinner, cheer each other on during surf lessons, and celebrate every small win—from learning to budget to simply showing up on a hard day.

Each week, a different student steps into the role of “captain,” encouraging leadership and personal accountability in a gentle, supported way. In the evenings, you might find us making herbal tea, dancing barefoot in the living room, playing cards, singing karaoke, or simply lying in a pile of pillows talking about life.

By the end of the program, these women won’t just be your housemates—they’ll be your sisters, your soul-friends, and your forever hype team.

Animal Hospital Volunteering
Animal Hospital Volunteering

Each week, our students have the opportunity to volunteer at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, one of Australia’s leading organizations dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating native animals. This is not a tourist experience—it’s a true behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to care for koalas, wallabies, flying foxes, turtles, and other wildlife that have been injured, orphaned, or displaced. Students work alongside veterinarians, nurses, and wildlife carers, gaining a hands-on understanding of the extraordinary effort it takes to save even one animal’s life.

But the experience goes beyond animal care. Students are introduced to the many roles that make the hospital successful—wildlife transporters, environmental educators, administrators, and volunteers all play an essential part in the mission. By shadowing and supporting these teams, students learn that it takes a whole community of people with diverse skills to protect Australia’s unique species. They also begin to see how their own interests—whether in science, communication, or leadership—might align with meaningful conservation work.

This is also an educational journey into the bigger picture of environmental challenges. Students explore the threats facing Australian wildlife, from habitat loss to climate change, and begin to understand the importance of conservation on a global scale. With up-close encounters and direct involvement in animal rehabilitation, they walk away with not only unforgettable memories, but also a deep respect for the natural world and a sense of responsibility to care for it.

Adventure Excursions
Adventure Excursions

Byron Bay and the surrounding hinterlands offer a different kind of adventure—one rooted in nature, connection, and presence. Our Australia program brings you into the waves, the rainforest, and the rolling hills of Northern New South Wales, with experiences that are both energizing and soul-nourishing.

Each week includes two adventure days designed to awaken your senses, challenge your comfort zone, and reconnect you with the natural world. However, these excursions aren’t just about adrenaline. Ultimately, they’re about wonder, courage, and joy.

Some of our adventure excursions include:

• Sea kayaking alongside wild dolphins

• Surf lessons and beach days with Byron’s best surf schools

• Snorkeling at Julian Rocks Marine Reserve—home to tropical fish, sea turtles, and manta rays

• Mountain biking through lush forest on the Northern Rivers Rail Trail

• Horseback riding along the beach at golden hour

• Five hikes through national parks and waterfalls, including Minyon Falls, Goonengerry, Springbrook, and Lamington

Whether you’re catching your first wave or standing under a roaring waterfall, these experiences offer more than just excitement. They reconnect you with your body, your courage, and the wild beauty of the world around you.

Adventures are tailored for all levels of ability, and always taken on together, as a group.

Cultural Immersion
Gap Year Programs
Cultural Immersion

We partner with local artists, Elders, and organizations to offer intentional cultural immersion experiences—all thoughtfully designed to expand your worldview, connect you to place, and honor the rich cultural heritage of Australia.

To begin, we learn about the deep wisdom of Australia’s First Nations people through a Welcome to Country ceremony led by Aunty Delta K. Through stories, spirit, and presence, students receive a powerful introduction to Bundjalung land. Additionally, workshops such as Boomerang Painting and Playing with Fibre offer hands-on opportunities to engage with Indigenous art, storytelling, and a profound connection to the earth.

Beyond Indigenous culture, we also explore the wildlife and biodiversity of Australia through educational visits—most notably to the iconic Australia Zoo. Here, students observe native wildlife firsthand and gain a deeper understanding of conservation efforts, environmental challenges, and the delicate balance of Australia’s ecosystems.

As part of our broader cultural immersion, students also participate in a joyful hula workshop with the Mana Aloha Troupe in Byron Bay. This unique experience is a celebration of movement, culture, and cross-cultural connection that spans oceans and generations.

Altogether, these experiences offer more than just insight—they invite reflection, inspire respect, and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the land, its people, and the enduring stories that have shaped it for thousands of years.

Wellness Workshops & Future Planning

Wellness Day

Each week in Australia, we dedicate a full day to wellness and personal growth. It’s a chance for students to pause, reflect, and invest in themselves. Wellness Day is built around three key parts:

1. Telehealth with your Therapist (Optional)

For students who are already seeing a therapist back home, we make it easy to continue that connection while abroad. We’ll help coordinate time zone differences, communicate with your therapist to create a coaching and care plan, and provide a quiet space and reliable Wi-Fi for your tele-health session. Participation is completely optional, we simply make space for it if it’s part of your ongoing support.

2. Weekly Wellness Workshop

Led by our Wellness Director, these workshops explore personal and interpersonal growth topics such as leadership styles, communication skills, conflict resolution, goal setting, and emotional awareness. Each session is engaging, discussion-based, and designed to help students build self-awareness, confidence, and essential skills for thriving independently and in community.

3. Personal/ Professional Development Hours

In the afternoon, we move into “future planning mode.” Students head to an office workspace with staff support to work on college applications, resumes, job searches, or future travel plans. We review essays, proofread resumes, collect transcripts, brainstorm next steps, and help students create a clear action plan for what comes next.

Many students also use this time to explore the possibility of staying in Australia after the program on a Working Holiday Visa. We’ll walk you through the visa process, help prepare your resume and cover letter for local employers, and even support your job search and housing search. For those who decide to stay, we offer an Extended Transition Package that includes on-the-ground assistance and weekly check-ins as you settle into independent living and work abroad.

Pottery Studio & Small Business Internship
Pottery Studio & Small Business Internship

One day each week, we step into a local Byron Bay pottery studio—an airy, creative space nestled near the coast and filled with light, intention, and the grounding energy of clay. During these sessions, students are invited to slow down, center themselves, and explore the art of pottery as both a creative outlet and a mindful practice.

Guided by experienced ceramic artists, students learn the full process: throwing on the wheel, hand-building, glazing, firing, and finishing. Throughout the experience, they deepen their understanding of clay as a medium—and, more importantly, of themselves as makers.

Beyond artistic development, students also explore the entrepreneurial side of creative living. For example, they use the studio as a real-world case study to discover what it takes to run a small, purpose-driven business—from production flow and marketing to pricing strategies and community-building.

Moreover, we’re thrilled to partner with local artists who are not only skilled craftspeople, but also inspiring mentors. Ultimately, this internship blends creativity with business savvy, grounding with self-expression, and artistry with real-world learning.

Wrap Around Care
Wrap Around Care

Wrap-around support is achieved by bringing all student supports into the experience.

On site Wellness Director

A licensed therapist serves as our Wellness Director and lives on site 24/7 with the students for the entirety of the program. The Wellness Director supports the group’s program journey by integrating intentional wellness practices into the daily routine, they also facilitate weekly group core sessions and wellness workshops. Our Wellness Director does not provide any clinical or medical services. However, they will coordinate weekly with each family's home therapist to facilitate each student's individual growth.

At-home family talk Therapist

We partner closely with each student’s at-home therapist. In most cases, families have already spent considerable time and care selecting the right clinical therapist—someone they’ve been diligently working with and who knows the student well. As a result, this trusted professional is uniquely positioned to support the student both throughout the program and during the reintegration process afterwards.

Prior to the program’s start, our team will contact the student’s therapist to initiate collaboration. From there, the therapist becomes an integral part of the intake and goal-setting process, ensuring consistency and alignment in care.

To support this, one full day each week is dedicated to student wellness practices. During this time, every student will have a virtual session with their at-home therapist to reflect on their experience in the program, discuss personal growth, address challenges, and revisit goals.

In addition, our program’s Wellness Director will remain in close communication with each student’s home therapist. Through this ongoing connection, we ensure holistic care and comprehensive support for every student’s individual journey.

Program Instructors

Each program has two instructors who are experts in experiential education and travel, they live with the group for the entire program. These instructors participate in every activity with the students and help them work towards the program goals. They provide consistent individual and group support.

Peer group support

Peer to peer learning and support is key for personal development. Alongside one on one time, students group together throughout the program for sessions on self-learning, discussion, and accountability.
