Why an All-Women Gap Year, and Why We Built One Based on Purpose

If you’ve spent any time researching gap year programs, you may have noticed something quietly true: many gap year programs end up being mostly women — but very few are designed that way. At Rooted Life Adventures, we’re proud to be launching our first intentionally all-women gap year program. A program built by women, for women.

And when we say intentionally, we mean it.

Women by design, not by default

In traditional gap year programs, females often make up the majority of participants. Sometimes entire cohorts become all female simply because no men enrolled that year. But that’s very different from designing a program from the ground up with women in mind.

Intention shows up in how:

  • The group lives together
  • Leadership and responsibility are shared
  • Support is offered and received
  • Challenge, rest, and growth are balanced
  • Emotions, intuition, and self-trust are honored

A program that happens to be all female is not the same as a program built to support females through a meaningful life transition.

Designed by women, for women

Rooted Life Adventures was created by women who have lived this work. Women who have spent years in gap year programs, outdoor education, and youth development, listening closely to where young women thrive… and where they struggle.

This gap year program was shaped by:

  • Years of working alongside young women as they find their way into adulthood
  • Listening to stories of females who carved their own paths — often without a roadmap
  • Noticing what helps females build confidence, intuition, and self-trust
  • Understanding what holds females back — and how to gently remove those barriers

Every part of this program – from pacing, to structure, to mentorship – reflects that lived experience.

This isn’t a retreat. It’s a gap year.

There are many beautiful ‘women-only’ travel experiences in the world:
retreats, wellness weekends, adventure travel and yoga trainings to name a few. Those spaces matter – but this is something different. This is a gap year program for women: a structured, immersive experience designed for those who want a gap year to find themselves, not escape themselves.

Our intentional women’s gap year focuses on:

  • Independence and real adult life skills
  • Emotional growth, intuition, and self-trust
  • Community living and shared responsibility
  • Meaningful adventure, cultural exploration, and local volunteering
  • Coaching, reflection, and preparation for what comes next

This is a wellness-centered gap year – not about checking out, but about tuning in.

Learning from women who built their own lives

Connection is at the heart of this program – not just within the group, but outward into the community. Throughout the program, we partner with local female guides, artists, small-business owners, farmers, creatives, and adventurers across Australia – females who have built lives aligned with their values, often in unconventional ways.

We listen to their stories.
And ask real questions.
We see many versions of what a meaningful life can look like.

These women model possibility – not perfection – and offer living proof that there is no single “right” path forward.

Why an all-women gap year matters

We didn’t choose an all-women model because females can’t thrive in mixed-gender spaces. However, we’ve seen, again and again, that in female-only environments, young women often:

  • Speak more honestly
  • Listen more closely to themselves
  • Step into leadership more naturally
  • Compare themselves less
  • Build deeper peer support
  • Take emotional and personal, calculated, risks sooner

When the environment feels safe, grounded, and non-performative, growth happens in quieter – and more lasting – ways.

A small but meaningful niche

Gap years are a real and established field, with global organizations, conferences, and decades of practice. Within that world, intentionally all-women gap year programs remain rare. We don’t claim to be the first program ever created for females. But we are proud to be building one of the few gap year programs intentionally designed, marketed, and structured as an all-women experience — blending adventure, wellness, support, and life-launch skills.

Who this women’s gap year is for

This program is for females who want:

  • More support than a traditional gap year
  • A wellness-centered gap year without clinical intensity
  • Meaningful independence, not isolation
  • Adventure with reflection and purpose
  • Space to listen inward while engaging fully with the world

It’s for females who are capable, curious, and still figuring things out — and who want to do that in community.

Built with intention and care

Rooted Life Adventures exists because we believe the space between “not ready” and “fully independent” deserves to be held gently, intentionally, and with heart.

This all-women gap year program is one expression of that belief — grounded, adventurous, soulful, and designed to help females trust themselves as they step into adulthood.

And yes — this one was built on purpose.

The Gap Year That Does It All: Adventure, Professional Development & Built-In Mental Health Support

If you’ve been searching for a gap year with professional development, career planning, or even a gap year with a real internship, you’ve probably noticed something: most programs make you choose.

You can have adventure, or you can prepare for your future. You can grow personally or have fun.

At Rooted Life Adventures, you don’t have to choose. Our programs in New Zealand and Australia combine it all — adventure, culture, life skills, independence, professional development, and built-in emotional support for young adults finding their way.

For Those Figuring It Out (or Figuring It Out Again)

Maybe you thought you knew what came next — college, a certain major, a job — and now everything’s shifted. Maybe the traditional path just doesn’t feel right. Or maybe you never got the chance to take a breath and really ask, “What do I want?”

Rooted Life Adventures was designed for young adults like you — smart, capable, thoughtful people who are ready to explore something different.

Each small group lives together in a supportive home abroad. You’ll share responsibilities, cook together, plan your days, learn to manage your time, and start discovering what independence really feels like — all with caring mentors by your side.

And because this transition isn’t always easy, our programs include built-in mental health support. A wellness coach lives on site to help students process, reflect, and stay grounded — and we coordinate with your home therapist if you have one.

This is independence with support — freedom with a safety net.

Professional Development That Means Something

Every Rooted Life Adventures program includes real-world professional experience and future planning. In Australia, students spend one day a week at a pottery studio learning creative entrepreneurship from women who built a thriving business from scratch. In New Zealand, students get hands-on experience at a sustainable sheep farm, pairing hard work with entrepreneurial learning.

You’ll also have structured time for future planning each week:

  • Resume-building that actually reflects you
  • Goal-setting and direction-finding
  • Exploring what career paths align with your interests and strengths
  • Support in mapping out next steps — college, work, or a new adventure

It’s not about deciding your entire future in one sitting — it’s about developing the skills and confidence to start walking toward it. So, when someone asks, “What did you do during your gap year?” you can say,

“I grew, I gained experience, and I figured out where I’m headed next.”

Real Adventure, Culture and Connection.

Growth doesn’t have to be stressful — and it shouldn’t be boring. Our weeks are packed with adventure and cultural immersion:
surfing, snorkeling with dolphins, kayaking, horseback riding on the beach, hiking through national parks, and learning directly from Indigenous leaders and local artisans.

You’ll experience another country deeply — not as a tourist, but as a temporary local. And you’ll do it all alongside a small, supportive group of peers who quickly become lifelong friends. You’ll laugh, you’ll explore, you’ll feel more alive than you have in years. Because becoming an adult should include joy, too.

The Perfect Balance

Rooted Life Adventures isn’t a vacation, and it isn’t a therapeutic program. It’s a supported gap year — designed for young adults who want to grow, explore, and prepare for what’s next.

Every week blends:

  • Real-life independence and personal growth
  • Professional development and future planning
  • Built-in mental health and emotional support
  • Epic adventure and meaningful cultural immersion

It’s everything you need to step into adulthood feeling capable, confident, and ready for the world.

Why Families Choose Rooted Life Adventures

Students choose us because they’re ready to step into something different — something meaningful, exciting, and real. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need the courage to start.
